Crazy Times, Crazy Dice

I've been a bit slow at posting because I started a new job a couple of weeks ago, doing project management and solutions design. And I had to fly to California for a week. Which wasn't all that bad...

And I've shipped off the Phoenix playtest document to the playtesters, many of whom have made characters using the "complete" draft rules.  I'm encouraged by the feedback, most of which is that there were so many cool choices that players had a hard time picking between them.

Furthermore, and at the risk of becoming a kickstarter addict, I've pledged on another kickstarter campaign, and it is one that helps me solve a puzzling problem I've had with Phoenix.

My new game uses lots of dice, and there are abilities that can increment or decrement the size of the die being used.  For instance, a dwarven earth ability lets a weapon increase damage size by 1 - so a d10 weapon becomes a d12 weapon.

That's all fine and dandy, and right now I have a rule that d12 is the maximum die size for the Mortal Tier.  This is mostly because the next die up is a d20 - which is way too large a jump for a Mortal weapon.

Enter Kickstarter:  the D14 and D18 project.  Huzzah!  I've pledged to get a half dozen or so each of d14, d16, d18, and d22 dice.  This is the perfect solution for Phoenix - I get to have a smooth die increment all the way up to d24 (there are d24 dice out there already).

Rough prototypes, as presented on the kickstarter project page.

And, of course, MapTool can support any die size with minimal effort so my online campaign can work with it for testing as well.

We do live in exciting times, don't we?

    1. Yep - I have one d16 that I picked up a few years ago and have been itching to use for something. Looking forward to having a few more in my giant dice bag!
