Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

This weekend we got to attend the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival here in Denver.  The festival centers around the mostly amateur racing of dragon boats, which is a 2000-year old sport.  The boats are long and narrow, with about 20 paddlers, a sweep/steerer, and a drummer to keep stroke rhythm.

There's also lots of food stands and vendors.

My favorite part, though, was watching the Lion Dance by the Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu Association.

Picture from SHMKFA website.

I hadn't heard of this type of dance before - the Dragon dances get a lot more attention from lay people like myself.  It was amazing how much expression they could get in these costumes.  They did a few acrobatics, such as where one of the actors inside would lift the other, making the lion look 10 feet tall, and even danced up on telephone poles a little.  They ate treats (lettuce greens?) from their trainers, which were placed in awkward positions to make the lions work for it.  Then the lions would "chew" up the treats and spit them back out on the audience. This is all done to fun drum beats.

I can't find a video of the performance I saw, but here's a video of another lion dance that I found on youtube.  Be sure to go about halfway through the video to see a little modern mix-up.

Fun times!  I'm not sure how to use Lion Dances yet in a campaign, but I'll figure it out.

  1. Dragon Boat racing. Hmm, I wonder if that line, "I'm a dragon boat racer" works in the bars?
